Jacob Bortnik is a professor at the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. Professor Bortnik completed his Master’s thesis in the high-voltage lab of the University of the Witwatersrand’s electrical engineering department, and did his Ph.D. at Stanford University, in the VLF group (electrical engineering dept.) under Prof. Umran S. Inan, and Prof. Tim Bell. In Sept. 2004, professor Bortnik entered UCLA as a postdoc, working with Prof. Richard M. Thorne.

Professor Bortnik’s main interests revolve around electromagnetic waves in the Earth’s near-space environment, including those produced by lightning, powerful radio transmitters, and naturally produced waves in space.
